Rev. Adam Shoemaker, PhD

The Reverend Dr. Adam J. Shoemaker holds a Bachelor’s degree from Boston University, a Master of Divinity from Harvard Divinity School, a Diploma in Anglican Studies from the General Theological Seminary of the Episcopal Church, and a Doctor of Ministry degree from Duke Divinity School. His doctoral dissertation examines a pivotal moment in the rich history of St. Stephen’s.
Before joining St. Stephen’s, Adam served as Rector of Holy Comforter in Burlington, NC, where he led a mission-focused congregation to open the first bilingual preschool in Alamance County. Prior to his time in Burlington, Adam was Assistant Rector at Christ Church in Andover, MA, where he oversaw youth and children’s ministries. Fluent in conversational Portuguese, Adam also had the privilege of serving as a missionary to Brazil from 2005 to 2006, an experience that deepened his commitment to global ministry.
Adam’s guiding scripture is Jeremiah 29:7: “Seek the welfare of the city where you find yourself, for in its welfare you will find your welfare.” This passage shapes his vision for St. Stephen’s as a vibrant, welcoming community, committed not only to prayer and worship but also to active engagement in social justice both within and beyond the parish walls.
In addition to his pastoral work, Adam is deeply involved in the Charleston community. He served as Co-President of the Charleston Area Justice Ministry in 2024 and is still an active member of CAJM. Adam is also the President of the Standing Committee of the Episcopal Diocese of South Carolina and Co-Chair of the Diocesan Racial Justice and Reconciliation Commission. Adam is also a rotating faith columnist for the Charleston Post & Courier.
Originally from New York City, Adam is married to The Reverend Courtney Davis-Shoemaker, and together they have three children. Outside of ministry, Adam enjoys sports, travel, and exploring the streets of Charleston with his family.
