Erla has worked with Berkeley County First Steps since 2021. Today, a Bilingual Parent Educator in the Parents As Teachers Program, she was previously our certified community health worker as part of the Connection for Child Development Program.
“Working with young children is an enriching profession,” she says. “I see how it positively impacts each child's growth, development, and ability to make decisions in life. In the early childhood field, too, our work is not just with young children, but with the whole family. I’s a profession of love and care.”
Under the Connection for Child Development program, Erla’s primary focus was helping Berkeley County's Latino parents with children aged 2 months to 5 years by connecting them to healthcare resources in the community, educating them about child development, providing them with activities for their children to help prepare them for school, and completing developmental screenings at their homes.
Erla also serves on the board of Healthy Families America, an organization that works with at-risk mothers in the community. She has also been trained through South Carolina PASOs to give the ASQ and ASQ-SE screenings. She holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration earned in Guatemala.
